BUSINESS INSIDER INC | MOGRTs / TEMPLATES

Having made After Effects templates while I was the lead motion designer on Insider News, the media tech engineer asked if I’d like to help introduce MOGRTs to the video team. At the time it was something that Adobe just put out and no one in the office, not even the media tech engineer himself, had tried making.

For a month after our initial conversation we worked together to make a MOGRT package for the Insider News team. I would make the MOGRTs and, if I ran into any issues or I was stumped about something, he’d write or tweak the coding. It was a lot of trial and error, but by the end of it I made over 20 MOGRTs that were accompanied by a detailed guide on how to use each one.

When the Insider News team branched out into 5 YouTube series, a whole new set of graphics needed to be designed and made into MOGRTs for each. I was tasked with creating graphic packages with MOGRTs for title cards, geotags, lower thirds, box in box options, backgrounds, text on screen options, a date and geotag combo graphic, etc.

Since I was doing four designs at once (Insider Docs wasn’t a priority to finish just yet), my main focus was to figure out what the title cards for each would be. Once I had those done, they’d set the precedent for how the rest of the graphics would be styled and animated.

Not too long after finishing these graphics, Decoded became its own YouTube series. With that, a couple of motion designers had already created a few graphics for it like bubbles pointing out symbols and an animated text on screen pointer. My job was to MORGT-ize those while designing and delivering a graphics package full of tech-style Decoded MOGRTs.

From my initial graphics design, my fellow motion designers and some of our freelancers (Elizabeth McCauley, Andrea Schmitz, Mithra Krishnan, Yin Liao and Hamzah Khan) added other graphics to the library that matched the style. In 2022, our team won a silver Telly Award for Decoded’s use of graphics.

When I finally had free time to work on the Insider Docs MOGRTs, 3 of those original YouTube series were cancelled and editors were running amok with the MOGRTs mixing and matching them. Even though the graphics on every video didn’t keep on brand, it made it easier to see which ones producers gravitated towards. And that helped greatly with deciding what kind of design I was going to do with Insider Docs’ redesigned MOGRTs.

It seemed like a combination of Systemic and Decoded were the winners and so I went with a simple black and white tech-like style.

Insider Tech/Finance

A veteran to branding and creating graphics for YouTube series, I was tasked with the complete overhaul of Insider Tech’s how to graphics. Since these were straightforward, they wanted it to be as basic as possible.

Regional Eats

This Insider Food YouTube series already had an established style. When I became the lead motion designer, I made templates for my fellow motion designers if they ever had to pick up a request. But I did have the opportunity to design the map style to match.

As the go-to MOGRT person, I often did frequent maintenance and updates to MOGRTs, After Effects and Premiere templates across the video team.
